Hi, I’m Syed.

Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Kelvin Living Lab, Queen’s University Belfast

Making graph analytics faster and greener.

What I work on

Graph workloads are irregular and memory-bound: they spend much of their time, and their power, waiting on memory rather than computing. I build algorithms that touch less memory, and runtimes that stop wasting energy while they wait.

I’m part of the Kelvin Living Lab, which is working towards net-zero high-performance computing on Queen’s Kelvin-2 supercomputer.

Teaching

Before Queen’s, I spent two and a half years as an assistant professor at Jorhat Engineering College, teaching machine learning, cloud computing, computer architecture, graph theory and discrete mathematics, and writing the lab manuals. At Queen’s I helped design the labs for the Energy Efficient Computing module and set up its Raspberry Pi server farm.

I’d like to teach systems, algorithms and machine learning, and build a module on measuring the energy cost of the code we write. Lectures I recorded during lockdown are on YouTube.
